How We Serve

Our Service to the Community

Historic Preservation, Education, Patriotism

The DAR motto “God, Home, and Country” is exemplified by committed Tomahawk Chapter volunteers, who display leadership in promoting the valued DAR goals of "historic preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor."

Our members have served as state chairmen of NSDAR committees during several past administrations, including American Heritage, American History, American Indians, Commemorative Events, and Literacy Promotion.

Patriotism

We volunteer at historic sites and have aided in the restoration of cemeteries, as well as the placement and memorialization in Leavenworth National Cemetery of a "forgotten" Vietnam veteran's cremains.

Harmon Park in Prairie Village, once part the Santa Fe Trail, was the site in 2021 of commemoration ceremonies of the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail. Tomahawk was proud to take the lead in producing the multi-chapter event. In 2023 our chapter began the restoration and maintenance of the forgotten Tomahawk Cemetery in Overland Park, KS. Founded in 1870, the cemetery had fallen into decay and was in need of some serious TLC. Our chapter, aided by devoted husbands (HODARs) began by raking years of leaves, trimming trees and eliminating poison ivy. The care of the pioneer cemetery continues to be a chapter devotion.

For more than 20 years, during Constitution Week, our chapter proudly distributed bookmarks to local fifth graders, imprinted with the Preamble to the Constitution.

Tomahawk Chapter gives financial aid to Appalachian-based DAR schools. We also contribute to DAR-approved native American schools and donate school supplies and personal care items to the students at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.

Our devotion to patriotism continues with our active participation as a partner in the United States of America Vietnam Veterans Commemoration.

We paid homage to the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the war by the presentation of tribute pins to Vietnam veterans.

We chose March 29, 2023, the fiftieth anniversary of the war's end, now known as National Vietnam Veterans Day, to present Vietnam recognition pins to more than 70 men & women veterans who live at Tallgrass Creek Senior Living in Overland Park.

We have also participated in several Honor Flight Welcome Home events.

Tomahawk Chapter NSDAR actively supports DAR Project Patriot, which provides support for 3,000 crew members aboard the USS John C. Stennis.

Each year, our chapter enjoys participating in events with veterans at the Dwight Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas and Dwight Cowles American Legion post. Members also contribute comfort items and gifts of warm coats to veterans. We participate in "Wreaths Across America,” attend Sons of the American Revolution flag retirement and George Washington birthday ceremonies.
